Monsoon Humidity and Your Packaging Tape: What Changes, and How to Adjust
· Packaging Tips
Every year around this time, we get a small spike in calls from buyers whose tape is "not sticking like before" — same supplier, same product code, sudden drop in performance. Nine times out of ten, the tape hasn't changed. The weather has. Kolkata's monsoon months bring a mix of high humidity, sudden rain and warehouse dampness that can affect how packaging tape behaves, both on the shelf and on the carton.
Why Humidity Affects Adhesion
BOPP tape adhesive needs a clean, dry surface to bond properly. During monsoon, corrugated cartons often carry more surface moisture than usual — either absorbed from humid air in storage or picked up during loading in the rain. A damp carton surface gives the adhesive less to grip onto, so tape that seals perfectly in dry weather can lift at the edges within days once humidity climbs.
The tape roll itself can also be affected if it's stored badly. Rolls left in a damp godown, stacked directly on a concrete floor, or kept near a leaking roof can absorb moisture at the edges, which shows up later as poor unwind or weak initial tack when the tape is finally used.
Storage Matters as Much as the Tape Itself
- Keep tape rolls off the floor — on a pallet or shelf, not directly on damp concrete
- Store away from windows, roof edges or any spot exposed to rain seepage
- Rotate old stock first — tape sitting through one monsoon already may perform weaker than a fresh batch
- Avoid stacking rolls too tightly in poorly ventilated corners, where trapped humidity builds up
- Wipe cartons dry before taping if they've been exposed to rain or high moisture during loading
When to Step Up to Waterproof Tape
For shipments that will genuinely be exposed to water — open trucks under tarpaulin, construction sites, outdoor storage, or anything moving through flooded stretches of road during peak monsoon — a dedicated waterproof or PVC tape is a better fit than standard BOPP. These are built to hold a seal even when the carton surface itself gets wet, which ordinary packaging tape isn't designed for.
If you're not sure whether your current tape and storage setup can handle this season's humidity, send us your shipping conditions and we'll suggest the right adhesive type and tape grade for it.
