How to Choose the Right Packaging Tape for Your Business
· Packaging Tips
Most businesses only think about packaging tape when a shipment arrives with a split seam or a carton flap has come loose in transit. The right tape prevents that problem before it starts, but "right" depends on what you're packing, how heavy it is, and how long it needs to hold. Here's a practical way to think through the choice instead of just grabbing whatever roll is cheapest.
Start with the weight of your load
Tape thickness is measured in microns, and it should scale with what's inside the box. For light cartons — stationery, garments, small retail items — a 40-45 micron BOPP tape is usually enough. For medium loads like electronics or packaged food, 45-50 micron gives a stronger bond. Heavy or irregular loads, such as machine parts or bulk industrial goods, need 50-60 micron tape, sometimes reinforced with a double strip across the seam. Using tape that's too thin for the load is the single most common cause of in-transit box failures.
Adhesive type changes how it performs
Acrylic adhesive is water-based, holds up well under sunlight and temperature swings, and doesn't yellow or turn brittle in storage — it's the standard choice for most packaging tape used across India. Hot-melt adhesive grips faster on contact and works well in cold storage or on recycled cartons, but it can degrade faster under prolonged UV exposure. If your cartons sit in a warehouse or transit yard for weeks before dispatch, acrylic is generally the safer bet.
Check net length before you buy in bulk
A roll labelled 65 metres should actually unwind to 65 metres — but not every manufacturer certifies this, and shortfalls of 10-15% are common with uncertified rolls. Over a large order, that gap adds up to real money and unplanned reorders. Ask your supplier for net length certification, especially for bulk industrial or export purchases.
A quick checklist before you order
- Match micron thickness to your heaviest typical carton, not your average one
- Confirm acrylic vs. hot-melt adhesive based on storage and climate conditions
- Ask for net length certification on bulk orders
- Test a sample roll on your actual cartons before committing to a large purchase
- Consider custom printed tape if brand visibility on outgoing shipments matters to you
