BOPP Tape vs Cloth Tape: What's Actually Different (and When to Use Each)

· Product Knowledge

Cloth-backed tape roll next to BOPP packaging tape

"Cloth tape" and "BOPP tape" get used almost interchangeably at a lot of local hardware counters, which is where the confusion usually starts. A buyer asks for tape for carton sealing and comes back with cloth tape, or asks for "strong tape" for a repair job and ends up with BOPP. They're both adhesive tapes, but the backing material is completely different, and that difference decides which job each one is actually good at.

What BOPP Tape Is

BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) tape is a thin, clear or coloured plastic film coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It's built specifically for sealing corrugated cartons — smooth, consistent tension, high tensile strength for its thickness, and available in the micron thickness and adhesion level that matches your carton weight. It unwinds cleanly off a dispenser, gives a flat, even seal, and is sold and measured by net length per roll.

What Cloth Tape Is

Cloth tape (also sold as duct tape or fabric tape) has a woven fabric mesh backing coated with a much thicker, more aggressive adhesive. It's built for jobs that need to grip uneven, rough or textured surfaces, tear cleanly by hand without scissors, and hold under stress that would peel a thinner film tape. It's noticeably thicker and more expensive per metre than BOPP, which is exactly why it isn't the right choice for routine carton sealing.

Side by Side

  • Surface — BOPP is built for smooth corrugated board; cloth tape grips rough, uneven or textured surfaces better.
  • Tear — cloth tape tears cleanly by hand; BOPP generally needs a dispenser or blade for a clean edge.
  • Thickness & cost — cloth tape is thicker and costs more per metre, which adds up fast at carton-sealing volumes.
  • Typical use — BOPP for carton sealing and packaging lines; cloth tape for repairs, bundling, and holding on uneven or outdoor surfaces.
  • Appearance on a box — BOPP gives a flat, clean, professional seal; cloth tape looks and feels heavier-duty but isn't necessary for a box that just needs to stay shut.
Simple rule of thumb: if it's a corrugated carton going into a courier or transport network, use BOPP tape — it's built for exactly that job and costs a fraction of cloth tape at volume. Reach for cloth tape when you're repairing something, bundling irregular items, or sealing a surface that BOPP won't grip properly, like a rough or dusty crate.

Can You Use One for the Other's Job?

Cloth tape will seal a carton, but at packaging-line volumes the extra cost per roll adds up for no real benefit — a properly specified BOPP tape holds a standard carton just as reliably. BOPP tape, on the other hand, often doesn't grip well on rough, dusty or irregular surfaces, and it isn't built to tear by hand the way cloth tape is, so using it for a quick repair job usually ends in frustration rather than a clean fix. The right call is almost always to match the tape to the surface and the job, not to standardise on one for everything.

Not sure which one your job actually needs? Describe what you're sealing or repairing and the surface it's going onto, and we'll tell you straight whether BOPP, cloth tape, or something else entirely is the right fit. Send us your requirement or browse the full range on our product pages.
